Giving birth and being born brings us into the essence of creation, where the human spirit is courageous and bold and the body, a miracle of wisdom. – Harriette Hartigan
Oh, what a night! I can’t think of a better reason to get out of bed after 11pm, other than to respond to a call letting me know that it’s time to support one of my beautiful clients through labour. Misha’s labour had progressed to a point where she knew that in the hours ahead, her precious baby was going to make his debut.
Misha and I had spent time together leading up to her birth to ensure she felt confident to make the birth of her fourth baby memorable for all the right reasons. Misha had spent a lot of time researching and preparing for this special day.
When I arrived at Misha and Simon’s home that evening around 12:15 am, I was met by a beautiful, calm atmosphere encompassed by the soft notes of guided relaxation music and tranquil low lighting. Misha’s favourite birth and labour affirmations were placed out in front of her for encouragement, as she breathed through the waves of labour and not against them. Her husband Simon and sister Hannah were caring for her, bringing soft and loving words of encouragement accompanied by a gentle touch to ensure Misha felt loved and cared for.
“A woman in birth is at once her most powerful, and most vulnerable. But any woman who has birthed unhindered understands that we are stronger than we know.” -Marcie Macari
Fast forward an hour and half or so and Misha was experiencing a lot of back pain. We did know baby was in a posterior position. Misha was a true birthing goddess: moving her body, using the power of her mind and breathing through each sensation. We continued to emotionally and physically support and encourage Misha to help her find optimal labouring positions, making use of all the comfort measures we had available in my labour and birth tool kit. Throughout it all, Misha and Simon’s three beautiful little children slept peacefully in their bedrooms.
To help this little baby gain more room in Misha’s pelvis in order to rotate and descend, we engaged in some specific Spinning Babies Techniques to help Labour progress and hopefully alleviate some of the back pain.
Fast forward again, we achieved more than what we bargained for. When we create space within the pelvis, we open up a world of possibilities. Misha’s back pain really ramped up and she decided we needed to move to the hospital. Misha’s sensations became very strong and close together within minutes. Displaying physical and emotional signs of a woman that is transitioning into birthing her baby.
As we quickly packed up, Misha bolted down the stairs to head to the car, Hannah following close behind. Simon had the car running and when I reached Misha, she informed me that she wasn’t going anywhere as the baby was coming.
With the paramedics on their way and the OOO operator on the line, Misha in all her birthing glory collected the soul of her baby, and in the darkness of a cold Tasmanian morning at 2:40am, Leon made a very calm and peaceful debut by the light of the silvery moon and my iPhone. Welcomed into the world by the guiding hands of his loving father.
There are moments in life that truly take your breath away. This was one of those moments. We gathered towels and blankets to wrap mummy and baby up, while we waited for the paramedics to arrive. Leon was so unfazed by his birth and was just so quiet and calm in his mummy’s arms.
I am so proud of Misha. There is a power that comes to women when they give birth. They don't ask for it, it simply invades them. Misha had a strong intuition to what was about to unfold. The element of earth reminds us of the need to be connected and grounded and I hope Misha felt the power of mother nature sitting right beside her as she found her own birthing power in that moment.
Welcome to the world Leon Leon Errit xxxxx You certainly know how to make an entrance. I have so loved my time spent with Misha and her family. Thank you for inviting me to join you in your birth journey. I’m lucky enough to be supporting Misha in her postpartum recovery. I have lots more cuddles amongst other thing to look forward to.
Love, Krista xxx
